Alicia Josephine, Princess of Neviers (Alicia Josephine Emanuela Anastasia; born 31 December 2004), also known as Josephine, is a member of the Ardenian royal family and a three-time Olympic figure skating champion. She is the eldest daughter of Crown Prince Nicolas and Crown Princess Marina, and a grandchild of King Emanuel III, making her second in line of succession to the Ardenian throne after her father. Josephine won the women's singles gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics at the age of 13, becoming the youngest Olympic champion in figure skating history. She successfully defended her title in 2022 and again in 2026, also winning the team gold medal in 2026. She holds the women's world record scores in the short program, free skate, and combined total.

Josephine was born during the reign of her paternal grandfather, King Emanuel III, as the eldest child of Crown Prince Nicolas and Crown Princess Marina. Her father has been heir apparent since birth, placing her second in line to the throne from the moment of her birth.

She has a younger twin sister, Princess Victoria, who was born on the 1st of January 2005. Josephine is a member of the South Korean girl group LILLI under Aire Music. Her other younger sister, Princess Eulalia, is a member of the girl group GHOULZ, which debuted in 2024.

Josephine is the first and only skater to successfully land a fully rotated quadruple Axel in international competition, accomplishing this feat at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and performing it multiple times since. She was subsequently named to the 2026 Winter Olympic team.

Early life and education

Josephine as a child

Josephine was born on 31 December 2004, the elder twin daughter of Crown Prince Nicolas and his wife, Marina. She was delivered naturally at 11:30pm at the Royal Karolina Hospital in Merlitz. The Catholic Archbishop of Merlitz, Eduardo de Volkonsky, christened her in the private chapel of San Leon Palace on 21 January 2005, and she was named after both her grandmother, Alicia Therese, ancestors, Saint Josephine of Asturias, Alicia Therese and Princess Emanuela of Ardenne. She shares her birthday with her ancestor, Chinese princess turned queen, Alice Mei.

She was affectionately called "Josie" by her close family, based on what she called herself at first. Josephine learned several languages including Ardenian Spanish, English, French and Brazilian Portuguese.

She began her early education at the Real Guardería Infantil de Santa Ysabel. From 2007 to 2018, she studied at the Royal Academy of Penserosa, where she excelled in the departments of Classical Music Composition and Figure Skating. In 2018, at the age of thirteen, she relocated to Seoul, South Korea, to pursue a career in classical and contemporary performance under the guidance of her aunt, Princess Helena. Her education continued under a combined academic and artistic curriculum accredited by the Royal Conservatory of Grand Madeleine and Hanlim Multi Arts School.

In 2018, she was the youngest contestant in Produce48, placing 13th and not making the final lineup for Iz*One.

Josephine is Catholic and had her first communion at the San León Cathedral in October 2014.

She has natural blonde curly hair. However, ever since 2018 she has dyed and straightened it due to bullying. Josephine is ethnically Euskanordic (Nordebask), stemming from the Castamari people, who were descendants of Viking settlers that integrated with the Basque population before being displaced from the Basque Country by Spanish forces in the 10th century — the Royal House of La Palma.

She used to have a nanny and governess, Esmee Ferreira. She currently resides at the Princess Apartment, also known as the Miraval Cottage, in San Leon Palace. During the summers she spends time at the Lilou Summer Palace in Longliere, a 15th century house built for Isabela Noriko.

Personal life

Victim of bullying

Her experience during her middle and high school years was marked by extreme bullying which only intensified following her debut in 2022. As a foreigner in South Korea's competitive K-pop industry, Josephine was seen as an outsider. Her classmates took full advantage of that. Many of them harbored jealousy and resentment, unable to accept her growing fame and prominence, and they subjected her to relentless torment.

Her classmates went to disturbing lengths to make her life unbearable. Her locker was often defaced with derogatory messages such as "go back to your country" and "you're a Koreaboo." They would steal her personal belongings, often ripping up her books or dumping ink over her notebooks. In one particularly humiliating instance, her classmates recorded themselves destroying a gift from her family and sent it to her anonymously, mocking her "foreignness" and implying that she didn't belong in Korea.

Rumors about her spread like wildfire, including malicious claims that she had only secured her spot in Produce48 because of her family's status and influence rather than talent. The idea that she had somehow "bought" her way into the K-pop industry led to a wave of resentment. Jealous classmates would accuse her of being a "fake" and suggested that she was using her family's wealth to bribe judges and instructors. This narrative of her being a "rich foreign girl who didn't belong" stuck and became a common refrain among her peers.

The most brutal incident occurred in late 2022, when a group of bullies cornered her after school. They dragged her to a secluded stairwell where they started to push her around. During the altercation, she was shoved down a flight of stairs, resulting in a fractured arm. The attack didn't end there; one of the bullies, in a particularly horrifying act of violence, used a pair of scissors to cut Josephine's hands, leaving deep, permanent wounds. The incident was so severe that she required immediate hospitalization and underwent multiple surgeries to repair the damage to her hands. The physical scars left Josephine deeply self-conscious. From that moment on, she began wearing gloves in public to cover her hands, a habit that continued even as an idol.

Her silence was not by choice. Her bullies had threatened her, warning that they would destroy her career and spread false stories to ruin her reputation if she reported the incidents. Josephine chose to keep quiet in fear. This led to years of suffering in silence. In February 2024, shocking details came to light when a video was leaked online showing a brutal attack. The video quickly went viral, leaving the country in shock.

Relationships

She has been in a relationship with Anton Lee, a South Korean singer and member of the group RIIZE, since 2021. Their relationship became public in late 2023 following confirmation from both the Royal Household and the group's management.

Military education

In keeping with Ardenne's royal tradition, members of the House of La Palma León are expected to undergo military training as part of their preparation for public life and state duties. Alicia Josephine, Princess of Neviers, is the only member of her generation to actively participate in practical service, balancing her duties as a performing artist with formal military education.

Her first term of service began in April 2022, at the age of seventeen, when she attended the Real Colegio Militar de la Princesa María Antonia in Neviers for three months. During this period, she completed basic officer training, military drills, leadership courses, and ceremonial duties, while continuing her public engagements. She returned for a second term from May to August 2023 and a final pre-graduation term from January to February 2024.

In February 2024, the princess graduated from the Royal Military College with the rank of teniente segundo (Second Lieutenant), receiving her officer's sabre during a formal graduation ceremony attended by King Emanuel III, senior military officials, and members of the royal family. The ceremony included a traditional inspection of cadets, a parade, and the public reading of the royal decree confirming her commission.

Following her army education, Princess Alicia Josephine began her naval training in August 2024 at the Real Colegio Naval de Grand Madeleine, entering as alférez de navío (naval officer cadet). Her curriculum, structured to last until 2026, includes seamanship, navigation, humanitarian mission simulations, and leadership training. Within a year, she distinguished herself for academic excellence and operational performance, receiving early promotion to capitán de corbeta (Corvette Captain) in June 2025, an appointment formally endorsed by the Consejo Supremo de Marina Real.

She has since taken part in formal ceremonies such as the Royal Fleet Review, the Annual Naval Parade at Grand Madeleine, and joint exercises with allied humanitarian forces, reflecting Ardenne's emphasis on peacekeeping and aid rather than combat operations. As part of her training, she has participated in disaster relief drills, international humanitarian simulations, and polar environment exercises with the División Real Ártica de Protección.

Her military education follows intermittent terms to accommodate her artistic career, combining academic instruction, field exercises, and ceremonial responsibilities. Commentators have described her advancement as "exceptional but consistent with her lifelong record as a prodigy," noting that she is the youngest royal in Ardenne to hold the rank of naval captain. She has attended national events such as the Día de la Defensa Nacional in Lousanne and the Annual Royal Armed Forces Review, both presided over by the monarch and senior officers.

Child prodigy and artistry

Early life and training

Josephine Alicia of Ardenne is a rare dual-discipline prodigy, achieving international recognition in both figure skating and classical music from an exceptionally young age. She began skating at the age of two and trained at The Grand Princess Emmanuelle Royal Ice Center in Neviers from ages 2 to 13, where she developed her foundational technique, speed, and edge control.

Parallel to her athletic training, Josephine pursued elite musical studies as a concert-level violinist and harpist. At age nine, she was admitted to the Vienna Conservatory Youth Excellence Program, studying under internationally renowned instructors and focusing on Baroque and Classical repertoire. She also attended the Juilliard School Pre-College Division during summers, earning top honors and recognition for her musicality and technical command. The media later dubbed her "Little Mozartina," "Mozart on Ice," and "The Noble Prodigy."

Her musical lineage draws comparisons to her ancestor Princess Barbara of Castamar (1740–1775), an 18th-century composer and performer regarded as one of the most gifted musicians of her era.

Junior dominance and national supremacy (2010–2017)

Josephine entered competition at an unusually young age and rapidly surpassed the juvenile and novice levels. In 2010, at just six years old, she became the youngest Ardenian Juvenile National Champion in history. By age nine, she was performing triple-triple combinations, a rarity even among senior competitors.

From 2010 to 2017, Josephine remained undefeated nationally and internationally, winning every competition she entered across juvenile, novice, junior, and senior-eligible events. She claimed repeated victories at the National Castamar Figure Skating Championships, Ardenian Junior Championships, Association Junior Grand Prix in Ardenne, Merlitz Trophy, Ardenian Cup, La Saria d'Or, and La Copa Leona.

During this period, she invented her signature jump, known as the La Neviers Twist, noted for its extreme rotational speed and difficulty. The jump later became closely associated with her skating style and technical legacy.

Junior and senior international career

Josephine transitioned to international competition with special federation clearance due to her advanced skill level. She won the Junior Grand Prix Final and earned medals at major junior international events, including the World Junior Championships and Junior Four Continents Championships.

Despite her young age, she entered senior competition during the 2016–17 season, becoming the youngest Senior National Champion in Ardenian history. She went on to win multiple Grand Prix events, including gold at the 2015–16 Grand Prix Final and silver at the 2016–17 Grand Prix Final, while also claiming titles at the European Championships and World Championships.

Olympic career and historic milestones

At just 13 years old, Josephine represented Ardenne at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, winning gold medals in women's singles and the team event, becoming the youngest Olympic champion in women's figure skating at those Games. During the same Olympics, she became the first woman credited with landing a quad axel in Olympic competition, marking a historic milestone in the sport.

She also defended her title at the 2022 Winter Olympics and was selected to the Ardenian national team for the 2026 Milano–Cortina Winter Olympics. In the lead-up to 2026, she has been widely rumored to have successfully landed a quintuple axel in practice, following footage and eyewitness reports from closed training sessions.

Later competition and legacy

Josephine continued to compete through late 2019, later returning briefly during the 2021 season, where she won gold at an Ardenian invitational competition prior to her formal transition into her professional career. She has been a member of the Ardenian national figure skating team since 2018 and also competed as a member of the national rhythmic gymnastics team from 2017 to 2019.

Often described as a once-in-a-thousand-year talent, Josephine is regarded as the defender champion of Ardenne, having passed the torch to the next generation of Ardenian skaters, including Princess Anna of Leraincy (b. 2010) and Isla von Rocaforte de Palma (b. 2014). Despite this transition, she remains widely viewed as the most prodigious skater in Ardenian history.

Sports career

Early Career (2009–2015)

Josephine began figure skating at the age of five at Imperial Colegio de la Primera Princesa, Las Rosennes, one of the top training centers in Ardenne. From a young age, she was recognized as a prodigy, quickly dominating the junior levels of competitive skating. By the age of seven, she had already landed her first triple jump, and by age nine, she was performing triple-triple combinations, a technical feat not often seen in such young skaters. Her combination of artistry and athleticism set her apart, and she became known for her musicality and elegant execution. She joined Natalya Pavlovna's group in April 2008.

In 2010, at just 6 years old, Josephine became the youngest-ever Ardenian Juvenile National Champion, a title that solidified her status as a rising star. By 2012, at the age of 8, she clinched the Ardenian Novice National Champion title. In 2013, she won the prestigious Junior Grand Prix Final, becoming the youngest skater in history to achieve that feat. She also earned a silver medal at the 2014 World Junior Championships and was crowned Junior Champion at the 2014 Four Continents Championships.

Senior Debut & Breakthrough (2016–2017)

In the 2016–17 season, Josephine made her senior debut, marking the beginning of her transition to the highest level of competitive figure skating. At just 11 years old, she became the youngest-ever Senior National Champion in the world, a record she still holds. Later that year, she earned a Gold medal at the Grand Prix Final, becoming the youngest skater in history to stand on the podium at this prestigious event.

Josephine's ability to combine intricate choreography with her classical training drew widespread acclaim. In addition to her artistry, she became known for her triple-triple combinations and flawless spins, which became a signature aspect of her skating style.

2018 Winter Olympics – Historic Medal

Josephine's most significant achievement came in 2018 at the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, where she made history as the youngest figure skater to compete in the Games since Tara Lipinski in 1998. She delivered a stellar performance and became the youngest Olympic medalist in figure skating history at the time.

In the short program, she performed a flawless routine to Chopin's Nocturne in C-sharp minor, earning one of the highest component scores ever given to a skater of her age. Her free skate, set to a custom orchestral arrangement of her own composition titled "Eternal Waltz of the Night," showcased her artistry and skating technique. The performance, which included multiple triple jumps and intricate footwork, secured her spot on the podium with a final score of 225.34 points.

Her performances at the 2018 Olympics, particularly the free skate, were lauded as some of the most artistic and technically proficient of the competition, leading many to refer to her as "The Mozart of the Ice."

2022 Winter Olympics – Beijing (Silver Medal)

Josephine made a triumphant return to the Olympic stage in 2022, competing at the Beijing Winter Olympics at the age of 17. Her comeback was marked by a stunning performance to the song "4ÆM" by Grimes. She became the first figure skater in history to successfully land her signature jump, the Leon Twist, a variation of the triple axel that features a balletic split entry, delayed rotation, and spiral exit. Her performance earned her a total score of 224.44 points, securing the silver medal.

2026 Winter Olympics – Milano–Cortina (Gold Medal)

Josephine competed at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano–Cortina, delivering what many commentators described as the most technically and artistically complete performance in the history of women's figure skating. She won gold in both the singles event and the team event, becoming a three-time Olympic champion. Her free skate to "Skyfall" set a new world record for Program Component Score, making her the first woman to exceed 80 PCS in the free skate at an Olympic event.

Public life

On 19 June 2010, Princess Josephine Alicia of Ardenne made her first public appearance abroad, serving as a bridesmaid at the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and Daniel Westling. The moment attracted international attention, as the then five-year-old princess was described by the European press as "la pequeña musa de Ardenne."

In celebration of her 18th birthday in December 2022, the Palace commissioned a biographical work titled "Josephine: Retrato de una Era" (Portrait of an Era), authored by the cultural essayist Dr. Elisa Navarro de Arístegui. The book explored her upbringing between Neviers and Vienna, her early achievements as a composer and Olympic figure skater, and her eventual global success as a member of LILLI.

On 31 December 2022, upon reaching the age of majority, Princess Josephine Alicia formally took her oath before the Council of the Crown (Consejo de la Corona) at the Palacio de San León. In her first public speech, delivered in both Castamari and Yuelian, she emphasized the importance of music, education, and international understanding as instruments of peace.

In June 2023, the princess attended the coming-of-age gala of Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway, marking her first official engagement representing the Ardenian Crown abroad. It was also the first occasion on which she wore a tiara — the Tiara de la Aurora Azul, a family heirloom crafted in 1894 for Queen Alexandra's coronation.

In early 2024, she embarked on her first official cultural mission through East Asia, visiting Tokyo, Seoul, and Singapore. The tour, organized jointly by AIRE Music and the Ardenian Ministry of Culture, focused on creative diplomacy and youth innovation, blending her royal duties with her artistic background.

In May 2024, Princess Josephine represented Ardenne at the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla in the United Kingdom, attending the royal reception at Buckingham Palace and the official ceremony at Westminster Abbey. The following month, she and her parents attended the royal wedding of Crown Prince Hussein of Jordan and Rajwa Al Saif, strengthening ties between the royal houses of Ardenne and Jordan.

Her first solo royal engagement abroad took place in October 2024, when she attended the gala celebrating Prince Christian of Denmark's 18th birthday at Christiansborg Palace. In April 2025, she participated in her first state banquet in an official capacity, honoring the visit of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain to Ardenne — a moment widely viewed as her full entrance into royal diplomatic life.

Josephine has graced the covers of numerous prestigious fashion magazines, including Vogue Korea, Elle Korea, Marie Claire, Dazed, Harper's Bazaar, W Magazine, Cosmopolitan, GQ, and Grazia. Her striking visuals and effortless style have made her a favorite in the fashion industry, and she is frequently sought after by luxury brands for endorsements and collaborations.

In 2025, Josephine was named global ambassador for SIAE Systems, marking the first time a female artist led campaigns across both the gaming and entertainment tech divisions. She also served as executive music producer for SIAE's rhythm adventure game. She is the sole ambassador for the luxury brand Damiani.

In February 2024, she attended a memorial service at Le Montrevant Alpine Resort in Averne to mark the 60th anniversary of the Montrevant Avalanche Tragedy, which claimed the lives of her great-great grandmother, Queen Alexandra II, and her great-grandfather, Crown Prince Raphael.

In 2025, after her tour with LILLI ended, she announced that all of the profit she made would go towards the Neviers Homeless Assistance Fund, an estimated amount of $15.2 million. She is the patron of The Princess Neviers Humanitarian Fund.

Philanthropy and foundations

Since her late teens, Josephine has been noted for extensive patronage in the fields of classical music, youth mental-health advocacy, and arts education. Her philanthropic network operates primarily under the Neviers Trust, a collection of endowments and cultural programs administered through the Royal Office for the Arts. According to Le Moniteur Ardennais (2024), the Princess is regarded as "one of Europe's most influential cultural philanthropists under 30," combining her background as a child prodigy and Olympic medalist with social initiatives emphasizing accessibility and emotional well-being in performance arts.

The Neviers Conservatory Trust was established in 2016. The Trust manages scholarships and educational outreach at the Alicia Josephine Royal Conservatory of Music in Grand Madeleine. Each year, the Trust awards approximately 40 full bursaries to students from economically disadvantaged regions of Southern Europe and Latin America. The Alicia Josephine Performing Arts Endowment was formed in 2019 in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture; the Endowment supports national orchestras and youth ballet programs, while funding community music-therapy workshops across Ardenne. A 2023 evaluation by the Ardenne Arts Council credited the Endowment with "reinvigorating regional performance culture beyond Montrevant."

The Montrevant Winter Arts Initiative was launched in 2024. It funds winter sports and dance clinics encouraging self-expression through movement, commemorating the Princess's early career in figure skating and her advocacy for sport as emotional healing. The Princess Josephine Foundation for Mental Health in the Arts was founded in 2025 after her speech at the International Arts Well-Being Forum (Seville); this foundation offers therapy grants and peer-mentorship programs for young artists facing burnout or anxiety.

The Neviers–Marbéliard Fund for Creative Resilience was founded on November 10, 2025 and is co-chaired by the Princess of Neviers and the Duchess of Marbéliard. The Fund supports trauma recovery through music, dance, and art-therapy programs worldwide. Its 2026 campaign will fund cultural-reconstruction projects in Palestine, southern Lebanon and post-earthquake Morocco.

In January 2025, she donated $5.2 million USD to the victims of the Jeju airplane crash and $10 million USD to the victims of the LA fires. Josephine is also a UNICEF ambassador, playing an active role in anti-bullying campaigns and using her platform to raise awareness and support children worldwide. In 2021, she launched the Valterra Foundation, aimed at providing scholarships to underprivileged youth in Latin America.

Other ventures

Josephine's influence extends beyond music and fashion, making her a multi-faceted figure in global pop culture. In addition to being the face of Chanel, Cartier, Dior, and Louis Vuitton, she has collaborated with Gucci for an exclusive capsule collection and worked with Calvin Klein on a limited-edition line of sustainable apparel. Her style has earned her accolades from the fashion world, leading to collaborations with Saint Laurent and Balenciaga for runway shows and editorial campaigns, as well as various beauty brands in South Korea, including YSL Beauty, Chanel, and Lancôme.

In November 2021, Josephine was officially announced as the global ambassador for Maison Valentino, becoming one of the youngest ambassadors in the brand's history. On June 15, 2021, she was officially announced as a global ambassador for Chanel. In September 2021, she was selected as the face of South Korean beauty brand Sulwhasoo. In January 2022, she was revealed as the newest muse for Cartier, representing their Panthère de Cartier collection.

On March 7, 2022, Josephine was chosen as the face of Italian luxury brand Tod's. In June 2022, she was named the global muse for Swiss luxury watch brand Patek Philippe. In August 2022, she was announced as the official ambassador for Hermès, appearing in their 2022 Fall/Winter campaign in publications including Vogue, Elle, and W Korea. In 2023, she became a global ambassador for Boucheron. By February 2024, she had become the face of Kolon Sport, promoting its eco-friendly collection, and in March 2024 she was selected as a muse for Roger Vivier.

In the tech space, Josephine has partnered with Apple for exclusive product launches and has designed limited-edition headphones with Beats by Dre. She has also worked with Samsung as an ambassador for their Galaxy line.

Ancestry

Josephine is a direct descendant of the Romanovs, Spanish and French Bourbons, and the Chinese imperial family through Alice Mei, daughter of the Qianlong Emperor. Through her grandmother, Grand Duchess Helena Alexeyevna of Russia, she is related to Emperor Nicholas II and his children. Her paternal line traces back to Maria Luisa of Spain, daughter of Queen Isabel II, and to Augusta of France, granddaughter of Louis XIV, the Sun King. Additionally, her ancestry honors Alice Mei, whose marriage into the House of La Palma León established enduring ties with the Qing dynasty and significantly shaped Ardenne's royal history.

Josephine descends from the Russian imperial house of Romanov through her paternal line. Her great-great-grandmother, Grand Duchess Helena Alexeyevna of Russia, was daughter of Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich and granddaughter of Emperor Alexander III of Russia. Through this lineage, she is a first cousin three times removed of Emperor Nicholas II's children. In historical and biographical contexts, she is therefore described as a direct female-line descendant of Emperor Alexander III.
